The Drifter is not Jim Duncan. Maybe a brother or some other relationship. The Drifter made his way to Lago just in time too have all the players in Jim's death at one location. The end is just an illusion, for dessert heat can play tricks on your eyes.

i think that the difter is Jim Duncan because he had the flashbacks in the motel room, only took revenge on those who did do the wrong, and he didnt die from the gun shoots in the bathtub.

Yes the drifter is Jim Duncan, in one way or another. His abilities show that he is more than human, he is too good at using a pistol, he dodges bullets, and he even acts without personality, like something supernatural. He's to bloodthirsty to be an angel and he is to driven to be a relitive, its like it happened to him. No one would seek revenge to that extent for thier brother or father. Clint is a spirit of jim Duncan left for his revenge. He can probably rest after the revenge is done, that might be why dissapears.

Eastwood himself says the character is the brother, he states this in the episode of Inside the Actor's studio. Having the character associated with being an aberration in HPD, he decided to actually make "the Preacher" in Pale Rider just that.

I never heard Eastwood say anything like that.He is Jim Duncan.Callie would have killed him otherwise. Also he states that Mordecai knows who he is.How would Mordecai know him if he was anyone other than Jim Duncan?
